"HERBERT AUGUSTUS CULHAM was associated with the firm of Messrs. G. Hopkins and Sons, Ltd., London, general engineers, for thirty-six years, and at the time of his death, which occurred on 29th March 1950, was occupying the position of managing director. He was born in 1887, and was educated at the Surrey Educational Technical Institute and the City of London College. On the conclusion of a four years' pupilage under the Surrey county divisional engineer at Godstone in 1908, he was appointed technical assistant surveyor and draughtsman to Messrs. Gruntwag and Morton. He joined the staff of Messrs. Hopkins and Sons in 1914 as a mechanical draughtsman, and five years later was promoted to be chief draughtsman. Subsequently he was appointed technical representative and consulting engineer, becoming a director and deputy to the managing director in 1940. He had held office as managing director since 1948. Mr. Culham was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1943 and transferred to Membership in 1948."
