Dr. Herbert Carrington was for seventeen years lecturer in mechanical engineering and commercial testing at the Municipal College of Technology, Manchester, where he was also head of the testing department.
He was born at Ashton under Lyne and served an apprenticeship from 1904 to 1908 with the National Gas Engine Company in that town, and after a brief period with Messrs. Platt Brothers and Company of Oldham, he entered the drawing office of the former company.
In 1911 he joined the Manchester High School of Commerce and a year later entered Victoria University, where he was placed first in the first-class honours list on graduation. He obtained a Whitworth Exhibition in 1914 and in 1915 commenced post-graduate research at the College of Technology.
