Dr. Herbert Carrington was for seventeen years lecturer in mechanical engineering and commercial testing at the Municipal College of Technology, Manchester, where he was also head of the testing department.  
 
He was born at Ashton under Lyne and served an apprenticeship from 1904 to 1908 with the [[National Gas Engine Co|National Gas Engine Company]] in that town, and after a brief period with [[Platt Brothers|Messrs. Platt Brothers and Company]] of Oldham, he entered the drawing office of the former company.  
 
In 1911 he joined the Manchester High School of Commerce and a year later entered Victoria University, where he was placed first in the first-class honours list on graduation. He obtained a Whitworth Exhibition in 1914 and in 1915 commenced post-graduate research at the College of Technology.
 
During the War he was engaged on research work for the Air Ministry.
 
In 1916 he took up his appointment as head of the testing department at the College of Technology, and held this position at the time of his death on 4th July 1933, at the early age of 43. He was the author of two books, dealing respectively with the experimental mechanics of materials and the properties of engineering materials, and of numerous contributions to the publications of scientific institutions and the technical press. The degree of Doctor of Science was conferred upon him in 1927.
 
He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1918 and was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Dr. Herbert Carrington was for seventeen years lecturer in mechanical engineering and commercial testing at the Municipal College of Technology, Manchester, where he was also head of the testing department.

He was born at Ashton under Lyne and served an apprenticeship from 1904 to 1908 with the National Gas Engine Company in that town, and after a brief period with Messrs. Platt Brothers and Company of Oldham, he entered the drawing office of the former company.
