HERBERT EDWARD JONES was born at Huddersfield in 1854 and was a son of the late Mr. C. H. Jones, J.P., a Director of the Midland Railway, and who was identified with railways from their earliest days.
When his education was finished in his native town he became a pupil in the Locomotive Department of the Midland Railway at Derby, and, after qualifying, he took up various posts on that Railway, being chief mechanical engineer of the Manchester District in 1899, when he was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Cambrian Railway, which position he held until his retirement in December 1918.
During his tenure of this office great improvements and extensions were made in the Railway Works at Oswestry, and Mr. Jones was responsible for the design and construction of large numbers of modern railway carriages and wagons, the first locomotive and complete train wholly constructed in the Oswestry Works being built under his supervision.
Whilst the late War was in progress Mr. Jones, as Chairman, presided for a year over the deliberations of the Railway Clearing House Conference of British Railway Locomotive Superintendents, and he was also a Past-President of the Association of Railway Locomotive Engineers.
His death took place at his home in Llansantffraid, Montgomeryshire, on 20th June 1926.
