"Captain HERBERT WILLIAM SEWELL, A.M., who was born in 1879, was educated at the City of London School and at Finsbury Technical College. After serving his apprenticeship at the marine engineering works of Messrs. Maudsley, Sons and Field, Ltd., from 1896 to 1899, he gained a year's experience at sea as a marine engineer, which was followed by a brief period as draughtsman to the South Wales Electric Power Distribution Co at Cardiff.
In 1903 he secured an appointment as mains superintendent to the Cleveland and Durham County Electric Power Co, with whom he continued until 1912. At the outbreak of the 1914-18 war he joined H.M. Forces, and served in the ranks of the Honourable Artillery Co until 1915 when he was commissioned in the Royal Engineers, being demobilized in 1919 with the rank of Acting Captain. After serving as manager in France for Mr. W. G. Tarrant, contractor, for seven years, he joined the staff of Messrs. Merz and McLellan, consulting engineers, of Westminster, and successively filled positions as representative in Newfoundland, plant erector to a tin dredging company, and clerk of the works. His last position, which dated from 1932, was that of assistant transmission engineer to the Central Electricity Board. Captain Sewell had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1906. His death occurred on 14th March 1947."
