The main feature of interest is the iron arched road bridge across Farringdon Street, constructed between 1863 and 1869. William Haywood was the architect, and the engineer was Rowland Mason Ordish. The iron structure is supported on masonry columns. Spalling of some of the granite support soon occurred, a problem that did not escape the attention of the editor of 'The Engineer' through the winter of 1869.
The contractors for the road approaches and the brickwork were Hill and Keddell. The ironwork was supplied by Cochrane, Grove and Co.[1]
The fine workmanship seen in the foundrywork and masonry of the bridge warrants close scrutiny.
