Howard Elphinstone
Sir Howard Craufurd Elphinstone (1829–1890), army officer, engineer.
Named after his uncle, Major-General Sir Howard Elphinstone
1847 commissioned in the Royal Engineers as second lieutenant
1853 worked in the Ordnance Survey in Scotland until March 1854.
1854-5 served in the Crimea, where he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
1857 employed in the topographical department of the War Office on an official history of the Royal Engineers in the Crimea. He afterwards served in the North British military district.
1859 Chosen by the prince consort as governor to Prince Arthur
1871 when the prince came of age, Elphinstone was appointed treasurer and comptroller of his household, an office he held until his death.
1871 KCB
1873-1881 commanded the Royal Engineers units at Aldershot
1884–5 temporary military attaché at Berlin.
1889 he was appointed to command the western military district.
1890 Elphinstone left Plymouth for Tenerife in the steamer Tongariro on leave for his health, accompanied by his wife. That evening, off Ushant, he accidentally fell overboard and was drowned.
