'It should be mentioned that in the ordinary course of rotation Isambard Kingdom Brunel would have succeeded Robert Stephenson, but Brunel requested that he might not then be put in nomination, owing to ill-health and the pressure of professional duties, and unhappily his early subsequent decease prevented any future opportunity being afforded him, which will always be a subject of regret in the annals of the institution that one so gifted and accomplished should not have appeared on their list of presidents.'
