J. W. Hoby and Company, engineers, iron-founders, and shipbuilders, of Renfrew on the River Clyde

Firm established by James Ward Hoby, a partner in the Birmingham civil engineering firm of Fox, Henderson and Co.

1850 Joseph Russell was apprenticed to J. W. Hoby and Co.

1854 The business collapsed and was taken over by its creditors.

1855 Joseph Russell was appointed manager of the works.
