JAGDISH CHANDRA MAHINDRA, whose death occurred on 20th January 1950 in his fifty-ninth year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1926. He was educated at the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute in Bombay, and served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Ruston and Hornsby, Ltd., Lincoln, from 1913 to 1915. He then returned to India and after acting for a brief period as assistant to Messrs. Martin and Company, of Calcutta, was made sales representative and engineer-in-chief in India for Messrs. Ruston and Hornsby and other British firms.

In 1921 he was appointed manager of the Howrah Engineering Co, Calcutta, and, after holding this position for a number of years, he joined the Tata Iron and Steel Co as sales manager. Subsequently he became the Iron and Steel Controller to the Government of India; he was also the liaison officer to the Ministry of Supply (Iron and Steel Control).

In 1945, he founded the firm of Mahindra and Mahindra, Ltd., which took over the following companies as managing agents: Machinery Manufacturers Corporation, Ltd., Harland Engineering Company, Ltd., Press Syndicate, Ltd., Mahindra Harland Engineering Company, Ltd., and others.
