"We regret to announce the death, on September 4th, of Mr. James Affleck, a former director of [[Foundry Plant and Machinery|Foundry Plant and Machinery Ltd.]] Mr Affleck, who was eighty-three, was trained as an engineer and graduated as BSc. from [[University of Glasgow|Glasgow University]]. His early experience was varied, and included service as a shift engineer responsible for the supply of d.c. electric power to the city of Glasgow, and acting assistant to the late [[James Weir|Mr James Weir]], a founder of [[G. and J. Weir]], of Glasgow, in the writing of his book "The Energy System of Matter". At Weirs he was engaged in most departments, eventually becoming foundry manager. In 1931 Mr. Affleck joined [[Foundry Plant and Machinery|Foundry Plant and Machinery Ltd.]], and managed the company for over twenty years, during which time he played a significant part in the introduction of the Sandslinger. He was appointed a director of the company some years before his retirement."

Mr James Affleck, B.Sc. (Member), who died in September aged 83, was well-known for his services to the foundry industry. A member of the Institute of British Foundrymen, he was President of its Scottish Branch for three years and was always eager to help his many friends and colleagues from his wide knowledge of the sciences and humanities.

For the last twenty years of his working life he managed Foundry Plant and Machinery Ltd, in the later part of that time he was a Director of the Company. His death robs the industry of a staunch friend.
