James Allen was born at Poynton near Stockport in 1824, and after serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Cole, engineers, Bolton, was engaged as an engineer in the construction of the Leeds and Thirsk Railway.
Having given his attention for a considerable time to improvements in the construction of the brass fittings of engines and boilers, he subsequently became partner in the brass and copper works of Messrs. Allen Harrison and Co. in Manchester, in which he continued for the last ten years of his life.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1856, and died on 11th December 1864, in the fortieth year of his age.
