1949 Obituary [1]

"JAMES ARCHIBALD BARR, who was born in 1886, was educated at Paisley Technical College and served his apprentice ship with Messrs. Fleming and Ferguson, Ltd., shipbuilders, of Paisley, from 1903 to 1908. After some experience as a junior surveyor he went to Burma to take up the appointment of engineer-in-charge of the Indo-Burma Petroleum Company's pumping stations. On his return to Scotland in 1912 he was employed as a draughtsman by the Mirrlees Watson Company, Ltd., for two years. He then accepted an appointment as senior draughtsman in the gun design office of Messrs. William Beardmore and Company, Ltd. On the conclusion of a similar engagement on the technical staff of the North British Diesel Engine Works in 1919, he became commercial representative and sales manager for the Rotary Engineering Company, Ltd., of Glasgow, a concern engaged in the wholesale distribution of electrical and mechanical equipment. He was admitted to partnership in 1931 and subsequently appointed managing director. Mr. Barr was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1941 and was transferred to Membership in 1944. His death occurred at Birmingham on 3rd November 1947."
