JAMES ARMER served his apprenticeship with a firm of engineers in Birmingham and afterwards became a draughtsman with Messrs. Smith and Coventry of Manchester.
In 1881, at the age of 24, he was appointed works and general manager for Messrs. J. and E. Hall of Dartford. He paid special attention at this time to the improvement of refrigerating machinery.
Later he became chief engineer for Messrs. John Birch and Company of London Wall Buildings, whom he served for twenty years. During this period he visited South Africa and Japan on behalf of the firm.
In the latter years of his life he was the London representative of two Yorkshire engineering firms.
He died on 11th September 1927.
Mr. Armer became a Member of the Institution in 1882.
