- 1820 James Burrough, the great grandfather of the present Chairman, Christopher Hayman (03/08), acquired a drinks company. This later diversified to become one of the first UK producers of absolute ethyl alcohol. From those early days at a site in London, the company grew to be one of the most respected distributors in the market.

- The name James Burrough later became synonomous with Beefeater Gin which it distilled and distributed world-wide until 1987 when the company was bought by Whitbread.
- This change of ownership was short lived for the Fine Alcohols division of James Burrough Ltd, which the Hayman family regained control of in November 1988 under the new name of Hayman Limited.
