James Hancock, Senior

James Hancock, Senior, (1753-1821) a timber merchant and cabinet maker at Marlborough, had a family of twelve children. See Hancock Genealogy

1753 Born the son of Philip Hancock. Brothers born in 1755 and 1758 but in 1759 both brothers and his father died of smallpox

1778 May 24th. Married Betty the daughter of Thomas Coleman, a Maltster

1818 April 27-28th. His business stock and tools sold. "Very neat and elegant mahogany chairs of the best materials and superior workmanship, japanned cottage and chamber ditto, commodes, chests of drawers, bedsteads, wash stands japanned plain and ditto, dressing, night, and claw tables, easy chairs, counting house desks, bookcases and bookshelves, handsome four post bedstead, rich carved mahogany pillars, field ditto with bedsteads of other descriptions, capital collarmandrel lathe and two small ditto, three frame pit saws, two long ditto no frames, crosscuts, bottle and wedges, grindstone, forge and bellows etc. etc."
