1886 Obituary

By the death of Mr. James Little, in his 77th year, an event which took place at his residence at West Derby on Saturday morning, another link with the past is broken.

A native of the Scottish border, Mr. Little came to Liverpool in 1823 under the auspices of his uncle, Dr. Renwick, at that time one of the leading medical practitioners in the town. He was apprenticed to the late Mr. Robert Preston, founder of the well-known firms of Robert Preston and Co. and Fawcett, Preston, and Co, and served seven years with the first-mentioned firm, thereby acquiring the freedom of the borough.

He remained with the same house in Vernon-street throughout the whole of his long business career, and became its head on the death of Alderman William Preston in 1871. Advancing years and failing health led to his retirement from business in 1885.

In politics Mr. Little was a Conservative, but never took any active part in public affairs. He was one of the oldest and most regular supporters of our local charities, many of which will benefit under his will, and his benevolence also was known to his relatives and private friends, towards whom he was one of the most generous of men. Mr. Little was left a widower in 1849. The funeral will take place at St. James's Cemetery on Wednesday at noon.
