JAMES NOEL BOOT, whose death occurred on 18th March 1942, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1901 and was transferred to Membership in 1910. He was born in 1868 and studied at the City and Guilds Technical College, Finsbury, and obtained a Whitworth Exhibition. From 1885 until 1890 he was an articled draughtsman in the lace trade at Nottingham, and during the next three years served his apprenticeship with engineering firms in London.
In 1895 he entered the drawing office of Messrs. J. Fraser and Son, boilermakers, of Millwall, and in the following year joined the Worthington Pumping Engine Company as chief draughtsman. Four years later he was appointed engineer to the same company, being responsible during the next three years for the design, layout, and installation of plants at various works in the provinces. He was then appointed engineer in the firm's centrifugal pump department and also became their sales manager. Mr. Boot's connection with the Worthington company lasted for many years until his retirement.
