JEAN CHARLES ADOLPHE ALPHAND was born at Grenoble on the 26th of October, 1817.
He entered the Ecole Polytechnic at Paris in 1837, preparatory to studying at the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussees.
In 1839, having passed out as 'Inghieur Ordinaire,' he was posted to Bordeaux, where for fifteen years he directed the services of bridges, railways and moors (landes). In this position he constructed a quay in the harbour of Bordeaux, allowing ships of the largest tonnage to discharge alongside. He also filled the office of Chef d'escadron d'Etat-Major of the National Guard, and was a member of the Municipal Council of Bordeaux and of the General Council of the Canton of Coutras. . . .
