1826 Baptism of Susan Anna and William at St. Blazey. Joel is shown as a miner
1828 Baptism of Jane. Joel is shown as a mine agent
1830 November 19th. Birth of a son. 'At St. Blazey, on the 19th instant, the wife of Captain Joel Hitchens, of a son.'[1]

1839-42 Captain of the Virgin Gorda Copper Mine, in what is now the British Virgin Islands.
Returned to St. Austell area
1842 October 13th. Death of daughter Mary. 'At Mount Charles, St. Austell, on the 13th, Mary, daughter of Captain Joel Hitchens, age 2 years.'[2]
1849 Announcement of the appointment of Captain Joel Hitchins to supersede the present commissioner at the Imperial Brazilian Mining Association.[3]
1849 In Brazil. 'The gold returns from Gongo and Bananal......Captain Joel Hitchens has reported himself at the mines, but has not had time to inspect and make a report of the present prospects of them...'[4]
c1852 Died - possibly in Brazil
1858 September 12th. Death of his daughter Jane. 'At St. Austell, Cornwall, on the 12th inst., Jane, only surviving daughter of the late Captain Joel Hitchens, formerly of Port-pean and the Brazils'[5]

1854 March 30th. Marriage of his son Joel Hitchins. 'On the 30th ult. at St. John's church, Hampstead, Joel Hitchins Esq., of Winchester House, Old Broad street, son of the late Joel Hitchins Esq., chief commissioner of the Imperial Brazilian Mining Association, to Laura, eldest daughter of Mr. T. H. Penrose, Haverstock hill.'[6]

1857 Imperial Brazilian Mining Association - mention that Joel Hitchens was sent out to Brazil to protect the property.[8]
1879 March 20th. Marriage. 'Moyle-Hitchens. - March 20, in London, by licence, Copley Moyle, Esq., barrister of the High Court of Calcutta, to Laura Mary, eldest daughter of the late Joel Hitchens, Esq., Chief Commissioner Brazilian Gold Mining Association, Old Broad Street, London and granddaughter of the late Thomas Penrose, Esq., 1 Park crescent, Brighton.'[9] This Joel is the son of Captain Joel Hitchens
