JOHN DUNCAN GRANT was born in Morayshire on the 4th of August, 1848, and was educated at the Godolphin School, Hammersmith, and subsequently at the Dollar Institution.
He served a pupilage of three years with T. Olinthus Donaldson, who at that time was engineer to B. C. Lawton, contractor for the Team Valley Branch of the North Eastern Railway between Durham and Newcastle, on which there were several large viaducts and other works of importance.
In July, 1868, Mr. Grant passed the examination required for appointment to the Public Works Department of the Government of India and was posted to the Madras Presidency.
