c.1829 Born in Middleton, Derbyshire[1], son of Thomas Elce[2]

1851 John Else 22, machinist, lived in Ancoats with Frances Else 25[3]

1860 Indenture between James Rawlinson of Burnley, Caleb Lancaster of Colne, Joshua Lancaster of Burnley, in business as Lancaster and Co, cotton spinners, with "John Elce, of the city of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, Machinist, residing at No. 11, Addison terrace, Victoria-park, near the city of Manchester" and Robert Earnshaw of Colne, accountant, concerning all their estate and effects whatsoever which were conveyed to Elce and Earnshaw in trust[4]

1867 Married at Todmorden to Evina Lord, the daughter of Edward Lord, machinist and cotton manufacturer. John Elce, of Oxford Road, is a widower and the son of Thomas Elce, Machinist.

1871 John Elce 42, cotton machine maker, lived in Didsbury with Evina Elce 27, Frances A Elce 18, Sarah E Elce 16, and his brother in law Frank Lord 22, cotton machine maker[5]

1881 Living at Cedars, Northern Etchells, Cheshire: John Elce (age 52 born Middleton, Derbyshire), Mechanical Engineer. With his wife Evina Elce (age 37 born Todmorden, Yorkshire) and their two daughters Frances Annie Elce (age 28 born Manchester) and Sarah Elizabeth Elce (age 26 born Manchester). Also his cousin Elizabeth Cunliffe (age 21 born Todmorden). One servant.[6]

1890 Died in Buxton[7]
