1830 he married Maria Crewdson of Kendal. The couple moved into a substantial house in Tottenham, Middlesex, where they had five daughters and four sons.
1830 Luke Howard's sons Robert and John Eliot took over the family firm, Howards and Sons.
Howard developed an interest in the extraction of the anti-malaria drug quinine from Cinchona.

1852 Published his first paper on cinchona
1869-76 His second major work, The Quinology of the East Indian Plantations, was the result of his examination of the bark of all the forms of cinchona introduced into India from the Andes.
