1807 Born in Plaistow, (West Ham) son of Luke Howard, chemist and meteorologist, and his wife Mariabella[1]

1823 Apprenticed to his father's chemical business at Stratford

1828 Made a partner of the firm Howards and Sons

1830 he married Maria Crewdson of Kendal. The couple moved into a substantial house in Tottenham, Middlesex, where they had five daughters and four sons.

1830 Luke Howard's sons Robert and John Eliot took over the family firm, Howards and Sons.

Howard developed an interest in the extraction of the anti-malaria drug quinine from Cinchona.

1851 John E Howard 43, manufacturing chemist, lived in Tottenham, with Maria Howard 44, Willm D Howard 19, Sarah M Howard 18, Joseph Howard 16, Mary E Howard 15, John E Howard 13, Mariabella Howard 10, Eleanor Howard 6, Alice Howard 4, Henry Howard 2[2]

1852 Published his first paper on cinchona

1869-76 His second major work, The Quinology of the East Indian Plantations, was the result of his examination of the bark of all the forms of cinchona introduced into India from the Andes.

1874 Elected to Royal Society

1883 Died in Tottenham
