JOHN FENTON NEWALL was born at Littleborough, near Rochdale, on 14th January 1859, and was educated at Eton College.
In 1877 he was engaged at a cotton mill in Oldham, and ten years later started in business in Manchester as a merchant.
During this period he was Managing Director of Kiveton Park Colliery, Chairman and Manager of Spurrier, Glazebrook and Co., Ltd., also partner in the Rossendale Printing Co., and head of the firm of Henry Newall and Son, merchants.
On the formation of the Calico Printers' Association in Manchester in 1899, his firm joined the Association, of which he became one of the Directors, having general supervision and control of the engineering and several subsidiary departments up to the time of his death, which took place on 5th February 1924, at the age of sixty-five.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1913.
