JOHN FRANCIS CARR was born at West Ditchburn, Alnwick, Northumberland, in 1866, and received his technical education at Birkenhead and at the University of Liverpool.
He served a five years' apprenticeship, terminating in 1887, with Messrs. Laird Brothers (now Messrs. Cammell, Laird and Company, Ltd.) of Birkenhead, and then went to sea for a short period as fourth engineer.
He joined Messrs. Belliss of Birmingham as a draughtsman in 1888, and eventually became senior draughtsman. In 1895 he was appointed general engineer and manager at the Apollo Engineering Works, Birmingham, and in 1901 he travelled in Germany and Italy for the study of general methods in engineering works.
In the following year he became general manager to Messrs. E. Wilson and Son, of Exeter, and five years later he joined Messrs. Willey and Company as manager of the brass department at their Exeter works.
From 1908 to 1915 he lived in retirement, except for a period in 1909 when he assisted his old firm, Messrs. Wilson, in their removal to Liverpool, and in their subsequent reorganization. He enlisted in 1915 and became trench warfare engineer in 1916. In this capacity he was stationed at Glasgow.
After the War he came to London, where he accepted an engineering appointment.
His death occurred on 13th September 1934.
He had been a Member of the Institution since 1917.
