"Captain JOHN FREDERICK HASWELL (ret.), was associated with the firm of Messrs. Hughes and Lancaster, Ltd., Ruabon, North Wales, engineers and contractors, for thirty-three years, including his apprenticeship from 1900 to 1905, which was preceded by a short course in engineering at the Victoria University of Liverpool.
After gaining experience as junior draughtsman with the firm for four years and also as a teacher of machine construction for the Denbighshire Educational Authority he received the appointment of mechanical engineer. In this capacity he was responsible as representative for Messrs. Hughes and Lancaster for the supervision and execution of contracts; more especially in connection with the design, manufacture, and testing of air compressors and Shone ejectors for the raising of sewage.
He relinquished this position in 1933, and three years later took over similar duties on behalf of Messrs. R. A. Davies, Ltd., Birmingham, civil engineers and public works contractors.
During the war of 1914-18 he was seconded from the 5th Territorial Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment and was on active service in Egypt and Palestine, and was twice mentioned in dispatches. During the 1939-45 war he was Company Commander of the Farndon Home Guard. Captain Haswell was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1904, and was transferred to Associate Membership six years later. His death in his sixty-sixth year occurred on 5th August 1948."
