Mr John G. Holmes (Fellow) Chairman of the Australian Branch died on 29th June at his home in Melbourne.
Mr Holmes served his apprenticeship with John Brown and Co Ltd, Sheffield. During the 1939-45 war he served with the REME in which he attained the rank of Lt. Col and served at one time as Assistant Director (Metallurgy) at the Fighting Vehicle Design and Development Department of the Ministry of Supply.
In 1951 he was appointed Chief Engineer with the Michelin Tyre Co. For a time he worked with British Nylon Spinners Ltd, South Wales and was then transferred to Australia to set up the first synthetic fibre production plant in Australia. He was subsequently made Production Director of Fibremakers Ltd, Victoria.
A member of the Institution's Council Mr Holmes took a keen interest in Institution affairs. He was a member of the Melbourne Section Committee since 1960 and was elected Chairman of the Australian Branch of the Institution in 1968.
The Institution has lost a good friend who retained his active interest in our pursuits to the end.
