JOHN GRAHAM YOUNG was educated at Fettes and Glasgow University, where he graduated B.Sc. in 1902. During the next four years he served his apprenticeship, divided between Messrs. David Rowan and Company, Ltd., Glasgow, and the British Westinghouse Electrical and Manufacturing Company, Ltd., Trafford Park, Manchester.
In 1906 he was appointed assistant to the works manager of Messrs. David Rowan and Company, Ltd., marine engineers and boilermakers, with which firm he had served his apprenticeship, and became a partner in 1908. He was mobilized on 4th August 1914 as a staff captain, but was granted a year's leave in 1916 on the application of the Ministry of Munitions, to resume his position with his firm, for the specific purpose of starting up and running their new shell factory. In May 1917 he was transferred to the Territorial Reserve, with the rank of major.
In 1919 he joined the Scottish Engineering and Stamping works at Ayr, and held the position of joint managing director until September 1926. He was then reappointed a director, retaining a seat on the board until his resignation in 1929. Mr. Young also joined the board of directors of Messrs. Glenfield and Kennedy, Ltd., Kilmarnock, in October 1924.
He was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1907 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1910 and to Membership in 1917. His death occurred on 23rd August 1939, in his fifty-eighth year.
