Started to learn the machinist's trade with the Franklin Foundry & Machine Co at the age of 18. On completion of his apprenticeship he spent 2 years with Corliss and Nightingale, and then moved to W. C. Helme, tool makers, before joining [[Brown and Sharpe]], who at that time had only seven employees. He then returned to the Franklin Foundry & Machine Co as foreman.
