JOHN HENRY CODLING M.B.E., who was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1912, was general manager of the Birmingham Corporation Salvage Department. He was born in 1881 at Stockton-on-Tees, and received his technical education at Stockton and Middlesbrough Technical Colleges. After serving a seven years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Blair and Company, of Stockton-on-Tees, he was, in 1904, appointed works manager and engineer to the Fowler Furneis Company, engineers, of Thornaby-on-Tees.
He remained with that firm until 1909, when he accepted a similar position with Messrs. Halls, Ltd., at their chemical works in Nottingham. In 1911 he became engineer and manager of the Bradford Corporation sewage works and retained that appointment until he went to Birmingham in 1921 as works engineer of the salvage department. In 1933 he was appointed general manager of the department.
At the time of his death, which occurred on 12th April 1942, he was rendering valuable services to the city in connection with war time salvage operations.
