1854 Adverts: 'MR JOHN HOLMES begs to announce to his Friends and the Public, that he has COMMENCED the BUSINESS of Auctioneer, Mill Valuer, and Arbitrator, and hopes, by strict attention to business, to merit a share of their favours.— April 28, 1854.

'To Engineers, Millwrights, Machine and Tool Makers, &c. MR. JOHN HOLMES, Auctioneer, Mill Valuer, Arbitrator, &c, will SELL BY AUCTION, the latter end of May, the Whole of the Valuable and Newly-made MACHINERY and TOOLS belonging Messrs. John Holmes & Co., Collyhurst, who are declining the business of engineers, comprising 25ft. planing machine, by Collier, will plane 4ft. wide and 3ft. 6in. high; one small ditto, by Sharp, Roberts, & Co.; shaping machine by Whitworth, to shape 4ft. 6in. length, with 12in. stroke; slide and screw cutting lathe, 20ft. bed, 8in. head stocks; one small ditto, break lathe, 8in., 9in., and 10in, back geared lathes, 8in. and 10in, single speed lathes, slide rests, large vertical drilling machine, four-horse steam engine, Walmsley & Holmes's patent six-horse boilers and apparatus, smithy tools, vices, surface plates, straight edges, stock of patterns for engines and lathes, &c; stocks, taps, and variety of other tools.— Full particulars will appear in future advertisements; or apply at the Auctioneer's, 15, St. Ann's-square.
