JOHN HOUSEMAN HUTCHINSON, who died at Nicosia, Cyprus, an the 19th October, 1902, aged 81, began his professional career in 1836 as a pupil to the late Mr. S. Hutchinson, Engineering Surveyor and Estate Agent, of Grantham.
From 1842 to 1854 he was engaged, under H.M. Commissioners of Sewers, at Brigg, Lincolnshire, in making surveys and plans for the drainage of the Humber and Trent levels, comprising an area of more than 30 square miles, as well as in practice on his own account as a Civil Engineer, and in making various surveys for lines of railway in the Midland Counties.
During the Crimean War Mr. Hutchinson acted as Assistant Engineer Superintendent of the 2nd Division Army works Corps.
From 1856 to 1860 he was engaged on railway work in Turkey, under the late Mr. George Meredith. He then practised in Turkey as an engineer from 1860 to 1872, . . . . [more]
