JOHN JOSEPH STEWART, M.A., B.Sc, who died last year, was born on the 5th July, 1861, and was educated at University College, London, and Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
On leaving Cambridge he served from 1881 to 1884 as pupil and assistant to Mr. Charles Lean, civil engineer.
From 1887 to 1896 he was Demonstrator of Physics at University College, London, assisting Prof. Carey Foster.
In 1896 he was appointed Lecturer in Physics and Mathematics at University College, Nottingham.
Two years later he was appointed Principal of the Newport Technical Institute and retained that position until 1915.
During the Great War he held an appointment in the Marine Department of the Board of Trade.
He was elected a Member of The Institution in 1913.
