JOHN MACRAE, son of the late Mr. William Macrae of Carradale, Argyllshire, was born on the 4th of July, 1836.
In 1864 he was apprenticed for five years to Mr. Ronald Johnstone, Civil and Mining Engineer, of Glasgow. Soon after the expiration of his pupilage he became, in 1860, principal assistant to Mr. John Miller, jun., of Edinburgh, for whom he staked out and prepared the working plans and sections for the Dumfries and Lockerby Railway.
In 1864 he was appointed chief agent to William Aiton in connection with a contract that gentleman had undertaken for the execution of 40 miles of the Suez Canal.
In the following year, however, Mr. Aiton relinquished the contract and Mr. Macrae again became principal assistant to Mr. Miller, for whom he then staked out and prepared the working plans and sections of the Girvan and Port Patrick Railway.
Mr. Macrae continued to act in this capacity until 1869 when he commenced to practise on his own account in Edinburgh.....[more]
