JOHN RICHARDSON, born at Huddersfield on the 27th May, 1831, obtained his practical training locally, and was subsequently engaged on railway survey work at Middlesbrough.
In 1858 he obtained the appointment of Waterworks Manager to the city of Gloucester, and 2 years later he was selected for the post of Borough Surveyor of Barnsley, where he remained 5 years.
He then received a similar appointment at Halifax, which he relinquished in 1867 to become Agent for the Mexborough estates in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, and Hertfordshire, a post which he retained over 30 years until the death of the late Earl of Mexborough in 1899. During this period he also acted independently as engineer of several waterworks and sanitary schemes for local authorities, and enjoyed a large practice as a valuer and arbitrator. Subsequent to 1900, ill-health prevented him from taking any very active part in professional pursuits.
He died at Well Royd, Rawdon, on the 13th January, 1908, aged 76. He was a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and a Fellow of the Geological Society, the Surveyors’ Institution, and the Sanitary Institute.
Mr. Richardson was elected an Associate of The Institution on the 7th February, 1865, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 4th February, 1879.
