JOHN ROWELL had been appointed joint managing director of the Projectile and Engineering Company, Ltd., only a few months before his death.
He was born in Catford, London, in 1882, and received his technical education at the University of Sheffield from 1903 to 1905.
He became an apprentice in 1897 at the River Don works of Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., receiving part of his training in the electrical department.
In 1904 he joined the power station staff of the Sheffield Corporation Tramways, and two years later entered Messrs. Cammell, Laird and Company's Grimesthorpe Works, Sheffield.
He became a foreman at the Scotswood works of Messrs. Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Ltd., in 1914, and a year later returned to Sheffield as head foreman in the machine shops of Messrs. Thomas Firth and Sons, Ltd., where he was employed for four years.
He was then appointed works manager to the Projectile and Engineering Company, Ltd., London. In 1929 he became general manager, and two years later director and general manager, holding this position until his appointment as joint managing director in 1934.
Mr. Rowell had been a Member of the Institution since 1926.
His death occurred on 13th January 1935.
