1909 Obituary
JOHN SHAW, chairman of John Shaw, Ltd., of the Yorkshire Wire Rope Work, Sheffield, died at sea on the s.s. Pericles on July 27, 1909, at the age of sixty-eight. He possessed much knowledge of the wire-working trade, having spent many years in the works which had been established by his father in 1820.
In 1868 he succeeded to the sole control of the business, to which had been added that of wire-rope manufacturers. The latter portion of the business proved so successful that in 1869 the firm had to remove to new works which have subsequently had to be enlarged several times.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1905.
