JOHN SHEPHERD was born on 29th April 1816 at Burley-in-Wharfedale, and served his time in the works of Messrs. Foster and Fison, of the same town.
At the age of twenty-one he left his native place and went to Leeds, where he worked for a short time at Messrs. Fairbairn's, and afterwards at Messrs. Ardill and Pickard's works.
In 1844 he commenced business on his own account, and for fifty years was the senior partner in the firm of Shepherd, Hill and Co., machine tool makers, who were contractors to the War Department, the Admiralty, the various Colonial and Foreign Governments, etc., and obtained prize medals at the London Exhibitions of 1851 and 1862, and the Paris Exhibitions of 1855 and 1867.
His death took place in Leeds on 18th November 1902, in his eighty-seventh year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1861.
