1877-9 Drawing office of Neilsons, Glasgow, locomotive engineers

1879-81 In charge of the engineering department at Felling

1881-2 In charge of the electrical department of Messrs Fawcett Preston of Liverpool

1882 Went to Nova Scotia, as engineer for the construction of the Halifax Sugar refinery

1885 Principal engineer of the Liverpool Nitrate Co

1885 Became a member of Inst Civil Engineers
