1843 Birth of son Thomas Edward Smith (1843–1909)

1861 Living at 1 Hall's Court, St. Andrew's, Newcastle: John Smith (age 54 born Newcastle), Smith employing 5 men and boys. With his wife Rachel Smith (age 53 born Newcastle) and their son Thomas Edward Smith (age 18 born Newcastle). One servant.[1]

1871 Living at 15 St. Thomas Crescent, Saint Andrew's, Newcastle: John Smith (age 68 born Alwinton), Engineer. with his wife Rachael Smith (age 43(sic) born Cramlington) and their son Thomas E. Smith (age 28 born Newcastle). One servant. [2]

1875 January 12th. Died age 71. Engineer.[3]
