1777 Presented a paper to the Royal Society which was summarised by Farey in 1827 in his Treatise on the Steam Engine. Stewart had invented a plan involving a pair of endless chains and ratchet gear for "converting the reciprocating motion of the fire-engine into a progressive circular motion for turning all kinds of mills".[1]
