JOHN THORPE LEWIS, born at Nottingham on the 24th January, 1868, was killed in action at the Dardanelles on the 9th August, 1915.
After acting as an Assistant Engineer on the Dore and Chinley Railway and on sections of the Great Central Railway, he joined the staff of the South India Railway in 1893, serving in various capacities until 1905, when he became Chief Engineer of the line.
On the outbreak of war, notwithstanding his age, he relinquished this appointment to accept a captaincy in the Army.
He was elected an Associate Member on the 5th December, 1893, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 13th December, 1904.
