JOHN WILLIAM HUDSON WESTMORELAND was lecturer in mechanical engineering in University College, Nottingham, for no less than forty-one years.
He was born in Nottingham and apprenticed for six years in the works of his father and uncle, who were general engineers and sewing machine manufacturers.
He then became a draughtsman for eighteen months in the Moscow Engineering and Tool Works, Nottingham, after which he was appointed lecturer at the Nottingham Mechanics' Institution. He held this position until his appointment as lecturer in mechanical engineering, drawing, and design at University College. He was attached to the staff of the college from the time of its formation.
In 1922 he retired, and continued to live in Nottingham, where his death occurred on 15th August 1934.
Mr. Westmoreland was one of the oldest Members of the Institution, having been elected in 1880.
