"JOFLN WILLIAM WISWALL, who was born in 1878, received his early education at the Liverpool Institute, and obtained his theoretical training in engineering at the Runcorn Technical Institute, the Liverpool Central Technical College, and at the University of Liverpool. After serving his apprenticeship with the Manchester Ship Canal Co at Runcorn, from 1895 to 1900, he continued in the employment of the Company for a further six years, first completing his training in the engineer's office, and later acting as assistant engineer. He then became assistant to Messrs. Roscoe and Little, Liverpool, consulting engineers, whose service he left in 1908 on taking up the appointment of manager to Messrs. C. Howson and Company, Ltd., engineers and ship repairers, of the same city. He held this appointment until the end of his active career, some thirty years later. Mr. Wiswall was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1902 and was transferred to Associate Membership two years later. From 1902 to 1912 he acted as lecturer in engineering subjects at the Runcorn Technical Institute. His death occurred on 1st May 1949."
