John Young Buchanan (1844-1925)

1844 Born in Scotland, brother of James G. Buchanan (b.1841)

Educated at Glasgow High School and Glasgow University, also at the Universities of Marburg, Leipzig and Bonn, and at the École de Médecine, Paris.

Chemist and Physicist of the Challenger Expedition.

1889 Entered Cambridge University as University Lecturer in Geography, 1889-92. M.A. (Hon. causa)

1891 F.R.S.

Awarded the gold medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society for work connected with oceanographical research.

He was a passenger on one of the trains involved in the accident at Northallerton.[1]

1925 Died 16 Oct.
