Joseph Francis Cotterell (1818-1903) was a British inventor and mineral water manufacturer who worked for Withy and Co. of Bath.
- 1811 Born into a Quaker family in Sea Mills, near Bristol on the 22th of May. His father, Henry Fowler Cotterell, was a land surveyor from Bewdley, Worcestershire; his mother was a local woman named Sarah Sturge.
- 1841 Worked as a Land Agent, staying at George Cole’s farm in Tockington, Gloucestershire.[1]
- 1844 Co-founded the wallpaper business Cotterell Brothers with his younger brother Frederick
- 1845 Married Catherine Naish from Axbridge, Somerset.
- 1848 Death of wife.
- 1851 Cotterell Brothers employed 25 men.[2]
- 1858 Married Antonio Stuart Prudencio, sister of Francisco Prudencio in Bradford on Avon.
- 1861 Lived at Avon Side Cottage, Saltford, Somerset, with wife, son, brother and servant. Working at Withy and Co.’s soda water factory in Orange Grove, Bath, where he employed 26 men and boys.[3]
- 1867-71 Registered four patents for mineral water bottling equipment and closures with his brother-in-law, Francisco Prudencio.
- 1881 Living with wife and three daughters at Crescent Road, Newport, South Wales. Occupation: accountant.[4]
- 1901 Living at 448 Gloucester Road, Bristol. Occupation: accountant.[5]
- 1903 Died in Bristol
