1811 Baptised on 20th January. His father was William Haley, his mother Jane Hirstwaite.[1]
1835 He married Mary Lees on 31 July 1831 at St Mary, Prestwich, Lancs.
1839 Joseph Haley's patented planing machine and lathe (patent date 28 March 1837) described and illustrated in Polytechnisches Centralblatt, Volume 5 [2]
In the 1841 Census he was living in Sudell Street, Manchester (age 30, not born Lancashire) an Engineer. With Mary (age 25, born Lancashire), Alfred (age 6, born Lancashire), Eliza (age 2, born Lancashire) and Margaret Lees (age 13, born Lancashire).[3]
1841 Listed as Joseph Haley, machine maker, house: Livesey Street, Oldham Road; Joseph Haley and Co., engineers and tool makers, 58 Spear Street, also 26 Lower Mosley Street, engineers & machinists and machine makers[4]
1843 Partnership dissolved by mutual consent between Joseph Haley and Alexander Grumbridge of Manchester, Engineers and Machinists, and also Manufacturers [5]
1850 Listed as 'Haley Joseph, Manufacturer (Haley and Thomason), Sudell Street, Livesey street.' Also 'Thomason Wm. merchant (Haley and Thomason), Marlborough terrace, Higher Broughton'. [6]
1851 Advertisement: 'BOILER EXPLOSIONS - HALEY'S SAFETY SIGNAL, for Low or High Water. Price £2 5s. — JOSEPH HALEY, Albion-street, Gaythorn, Manchester.' There followed quoted 'Opinions of Eminent Engineers', from W & J Galloway, George Peel, Benjamin Hick and Sons, W. Fairbairn and Son, Richard Ormerod and Sons [7]
1851 Living at 81 Sudell Street, Manchester (age 40 born Bradford), an Engineer. With his wife Mary (age 39 born Manchester) and their children Alfred W. (age 15 born Manchester), Elizabeth (age 11 born Manchester), Louisa (age 9 born Manchester), Herbert (age 4 born Manchester), and Henry (age 4 born Manchester). Also his unmarried sister-in-law Margaret Lees age 23 born Manchester). [8]
1861 Living at 14 Moss Lane, Moss Side (age 50 born Bradford), Engineer and Machinist employing 40 men and 7 boys. With his wife Mary (age 49 born Manchester) and their children Alfred William (age 25 born Manchester), an Engineer; Louisa (age 18 born Manchester); Herbert (age 14 born Manchester); henry (age 11 born Manchester); and Alice (age 7 born Manchester). One servant. [9]
1861 January 22nd. Died. Of Moss Side, Manchester
