. . . . In August, 1875, he was sent by Mr. Waugh for a course of practical training to the shops of W. and J. Yates, engineers and millwrights, of Blackburn. There he remained until April, 1876, when he left to prepare for the entrance examination of the Royal Indian Engineering College at Cooper’s Hill. He went through the three years’ course at Coopers’ Hill, where he was known as a diligent and successful student, modest and retiring, and he passed out sixth in July, 1879, a year noted at the college for severity of competition.
After ten months’ preliminary training at the works of Messrs. Handyside and Co, Derby, where he was principally engaged on designs for bridges and roofs, Mr. Coy took up the appointment of Assistant Engineer in the Public Works Department of the Government of India.
