1865 Joseph Twibill patented (No. 2431) a water tube boiler. H W Dickinson [1] considered this to be the first to combine in a sectional boiler straight tubes at a slight inclination to the horizontal. However, there appeared to be no provision for cleaning. The source notes that Twibill was engaged in the manufacture of feed-water heaters or economisers.
1866 Patent No. 2378 to Joseph Twibill of Irvine, Ayrshire for the invention of improvements in steam generators or boilers, water heaters, and apparatus connected therewith [2]. Business to be carried on by Joseph Twibill [4]
1876 Special Resolution for Liquidation by Arrangement of the affairs of Joseph Twibill and Robert Squire James, lately carrying on business in copartnership as Engineers and Fuel Economiser Manufacturers, at Tatton Street in Hulme, under the style or firm of Joseph Twibill and Co., which said Joseph Twibill still carries on the same business at the same place, and which said Robert Squire James also carries on business as an Iron Merchant and Iron Founder at 97, Bridge Street, Manchester, and at Newton Heath, and lately carried on buisness as an Iron Founder at Adelphi Foundry, Salford [5]
1876 'The Engineer' reported that 'The failure of Joseph Twibill, of Manchester, has been followed by other commercial difficulties in the iron trade of this district, and the suspension is now announced of Mr Robert Squire James, lately in partnership with Mr Twibill, under the style of Joseph Twibill & Co engineers and fuel economiser manufacturers, also carrying on business as an iron merchant and iron founder at Bridge Street, Manchester, and at Newton Heath, and lately as an ironfounder at the Adelphi Foundry, Salford. The total liabilities are estimated at £30,000' [6]
