Langwith By-Product Co
A subsidiary of the Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co Ltd; located at Langwith Colliery
By 1913 the Langwith company had 6 Mond gas producers and also accompanying plant extracting sulphur and ammonia; the waste gases were then burnt for heating[1]
WWI The site was developed as a site for a factory to make ammonium perchlorate from the ammonia by-product. The manufacturing process also needed massive amounts of electrical energy for electrolysis of salt. The Power Gas Co together with the National Gas Co started making electricity generators and other equipment for the company. Soldiers were conscripted to increase the workforce to over 500 to build the factory.
1915 The company managed the H. M. Factory at Langwith (Mansfield)
1917 Production started in June 1917 with full production reached in July, 1918.
Production at Langwith gradually decreased at the end of the war and finally finished by the end of 1920.
1927 the site was acquired by the Sheepbridge Co. who pulled it down
