Leonard Lancaster Merrifield (1856-1914)

1914 Obituary [1]

LEONARD LANCASTER MERRIFIELD was born at Enfield, Maine, U.S.A., on 14th June 1856.

After completing his preliminary education, he served an apprenticeship of three years in a Boston machine shop, and of one year with Messrs. Davis and Farnum of Waltham, Mass.

In 1881 he was engaged as constructing engineer in the works of Messrs. A. 0. Granger and Co. This firm subsequently amalgamated with the United Gas Improvement Co. of Philadelphia, U.S.A., and Mr. Merrifield then became constructing engineer for the latter. He served in this capacity for twelve years, and built and remodelled a number of gas works in the United States and Canada, besides conducting experiments which led to improvements in their structure and methods.

In 1893 he became chief engineer to the Economical Gas Apparatus Construction Co., Ltd., which post he held until his death, which took place at Toronto, Ontario, on 21st June 1914, at the age of fifty-eight.

He was elected a Member of this Institution in 1896.
